‘California Dreamin’ – the Calera way

Legendary Californian pioneer Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producer Josh Jensen liberates some incredible bottles from his cellar.

California evokes so many surreal impressions and if you have ever been in vineyard country there, you sure end up “Californian Dreamin” – forever. Josh Jensen purchased his Mt. Harlan property in San Benito County in 1974, the same year Mama Cass died – as one great era came to an end another began.

And this was truly pioneering times for the Californian wine industry; Jensen taking two years searching throughout California to find the limestone soils that he had drawn inspiration from in his time in Burgundy, France. He found it 90 miles south of San Francisco and about 25 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, at Mt. Harlan with its elevation at 2,200 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest and coldest vineyard properties in California.

You could say the ‘rest is history’ but even with a colourful three decades of experience and evolution at Calera Wine Co, Jensen is still trailblazing, whether it be his amazing gravity-feed winery or achieving organic certification in 2008, things don’t stand still at Calera. Then there’s the incredible ability of Calera wines to age defying the sceptics of new world chardonnay and pinot noir and only coming in to their own in the first decade in bottle and cruising to the second decade and beyond. Calera Wine Co. is simply unparalleled.

“stopped into a church,
I passed along the way
well, I got down on my knees
and I pretend to pray
you know the preacher likes the cold
he knows I’m gonna stay
California Dreamin’
on such a winter’s day”
