Renowned Barossa Valley vigneron, Rolf Binder, is a dynamic and entrepreneurial winemaker who pioneered the renaissance of old vine shiraz, mataro (mourvedre) and grenache blends through the 1980s. His accolades include back-to-back trophies in 1995 and 96 for the Best Shiraz at the Barossa Wine Show, proceeding on to a hat trick with the trophy for the Best Small Producer 1996, 97 and 2002, and Best Winemaker in 2005. Rolf was the first Australian winemaker to be awarded 99 points from Robert Parker with the Magpie Estate Malcom Shiraz and Veritas/Rolf Binder Hanisch Shiraz.
In Singapore for a brief visit, the Wandering Palate has persuaded Rolf to dig in to the cellar and present a vertical of 6 vintages of the legendary Bull’s Blood. This is about as cuddly as red wine gets; the quintessence and ethos of the Barossa Valley, a concentrated perfume of blood plums, dried figs and Christmas cake fruits, intense layers of creamy richness and dark chocolate coated black berry fruits and spice with gripping, powdery tannins from start to finish with a dried herbal nuances from 100-year-old mourvedre vines. An iron fist in a velvet glove!
The dinner will also feature many other wines from the Rolf Binder and Magpie Estate range, paired to the excellent contemporary Australian cuisine at The Moomba.
